Tasting notes

Bright medium red. Enticing, ethereal aromas of urgent crushed berries, flowers and medicinal herbs. Shows less volume than the 2012 version but this is silky and balanced, with harmonious acidity giving shape to the smoky red and black fruit flavors. This should evolve gracefully and gain in sweetness and complexity with bottle age. Dugat told me he'd wait ten years before pulling the cork.

Bright, deep red. Knockout perfume of red cherry, framboise, flowers and crushed stone. Wonderfully silky and sweet on entry, then reticent and primary in the mid-palate, showing less obvious power than the Charmes. Not a powerful style but finishes with outstanding finesse of tannins and a whiplash of red fruits and stone. This will call for at least five or six years of bottle aging.

Another strong performance from Dugat is the 2011 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru, a wine that transcends the vintage, offering up aromas of cherries, plums, spices and rose petals, without any of the somewhat herbaceous characteristics that sometimes mark out 2011s. Full-bodied, fleshy and seamless, it's sensual and layered, with a rich core of fruit, melting tannins and a saline finish. This vintage offers such immediate pleasure that it makes a good choice for drinking over the next decade.

The 2011 Griotte-Chambertin is wonderfully lifted and perfumed in the glass, reflecting the true essence of Griotte. Here the flavors and textures inhabit an upper register of pure beauty. Sweet floral notes are layered into a finish of simply extraordinary finesse.

About the Producer

Domain Claude Dugat is a tiny domaine in Burgundy with cult status, and the quality to match. Claude Dugat has the good fortune to work in the Cellier des Dimes, purchased by his father Maurice in 1955. This, previously known as the Grange des Dimes, was where the locals would bring their tithe of grapes or cereal, depending on their holdings, for the benefit of the church. The building was constructed in 1219 though the stone pillars inside are thought to date back to Gallo-Roman times. The Dugats – Claude, assisted by his wife, son and two daughters – have three hectares of their own and a further three rented. The younger generation also run a very small negociant business alongside, La Gibryotte, just covering the wines of their commune – Bourgogne Rouge, Gevrey Chambertin, Gevrey Chambertin 1er cru (unspecified) and Charmes-Chambertin.
