Deep golden hue. The nose disappoints as it lacks intensity: whiffs of hot buttered toast and marmalade. Not a heavyweight 1990 but lovely definition, citrus and roundness here. Sharp and citrus. Drinking very well now. Excellent. Tasted June 2001.

The best young de Malle I have ever tasted, the 1990 is a Climens look-alike. It exhibits a fresh, orange, citrusy, honeyed nose touched subtly by new oak. In the mouth, there is wonderful richness, zesty acidity to provide definition, and a crisp, rich, authoritative yet stylish finish. It should drink well for at least 10-15 or more years. If the price is right, this might be worth the plunge.

The results of this tasting were extremely interesting, as I and most Bordeaux brokers and enthusiasts believed that Chateau de Malle's 1990 was the finest sweet wine the estate had made in decades. Certainly it is an outstanding effort, and given the reasonable price, it is a noteworthy purchase. The 1990 is full-bodied, with excellent sweetness, fine purity, and plenty of rich, honeyed fruit buttressed by noticeable new oak. It has not yet developed the complexity and aromatics displayed by the 1988, but the 1990 is clearly an outstanding effort for the vintage. It should evolve gracefully for 10-15 years.
