The 2013 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is fabulous. The aromatics alone are thrilling. This is what Barolo is all about. Rose petal, holiday spice cake, leather, blood orange and macerated cherry abound. Silky and powerful, the 2013 shows tons of density on the palate and yet remains light on its feet for such a big wine. The wine's sensuality offers a mirage of accessibility, but the 2013 is best cellared for at least a handful of years. There is nothing like Barolo, and this is a terrific example. The 2013 saw 36-38 days on the skins followed by five years in cask, with a preference for larger and more neutral oak that allows for a more gradual pace of aging in the cellar than smaller casks.

The 2013 Barolo Riserva San Giuseppe is just gorgeous. It's good to see how well the 2013 has come together since I first tasted it. Powerful and virile, with tremendous aromatic intensity and tons of structure, the 2013 has so much to offer. Time in the glass brings out myriad layers of nuance. Sage, mint, lavender, geranium, cinnamon and blood orange add an exotic flair. Put simply, the 2013 San Giuseppe is everything Barolo should be. Unlike the Vignolo, the San Giuseppe is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Even so, it is impressive in the early going.

About the Producer
At the gates of Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of the Barolo Zone, on the slopes of the Bricco Boschis, one finds the Cavallotto Winery, which lies on 25 hectares of land. Since 1928, the Cavallotto family has owned the estate Tenuta Bricco Boschis. In 1946, they were the first cultivators in Castiglione Falletto to vinify all of their estate’s fruit. In 1948 they released the first bottling of their own BAROLO wine, with the label and registered trademark of Cavallotto. Today the children of Olivio – Laura, Giuseppe and Alfio, the 4th generation working the family farm – continue to exclusively vinify the grapes produced in their estate vineyards into DOC and DOCG wines: Barolo, Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba, Langhe Nebbiolo, Langhe Freisa, Langhe “Grign” made from Grignolino grapes, Langhe Chardonnay and “Pinner” made from Pinot Nero grapes.
