Tasting notes

A lifted, rather pointed nose with blackberry, iodine and developed a rose petal scent with aeration in the glass. The palate is sweet and supple, lots of unresolved new oak but smooth in texture. Ripe cassis, blueberry and a cooked meat note towards the finish that has retained good poise and focus, perhaps even developed a little opulence over the last couple of years. Not quite living up to its promise out of barrel and just after bottling but still fine for the vintage. Drink 2009-2020. Tasted November 2006.

This may be the finest Canon produced under the new administration (the Chanel fashion house). A blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, it reveals a dense ruby/purple color along with aromas of framboise, liquid stones, black cherries and currants. It is a medium-bodied, classically structured, slightly austere but strongly flavored, well-balanced wine with an inner strength as well as character. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020+

June 2004 at en primeur. A good wine from Canon this year. The nose is totally closed and the palate has dry, slightly coarse tannins with notes of blackberry and tar. Quite abrupt on the finish but this wine has more body and harmony than most other Right Bank wines. Tasted again in June 2003: similar notes though compared to other Right Bank wines which had improved in the glass, this was looking a bit more simplistic, but a splendid bottle in London in October 2004 fulfilled its initial promise. A toasty, meaty nose that is still quite unevolved. The palate is cohesive, focused, with blackberry leaf and a little redcurrant. Very well poised with excellent definition. There is an undercurrent of greenness that lifts the wine. Certainly a success for a Saint Emilion 2002. Tasted October 2004.

Lifted black fruits on the nose, touch of cassis, smoke and blackberry leaf. The palate is medium-bodied, fine silky tannins, good structure, very elegant. Macerated black cherries, a touch of spice developing counterpoised by edgy citrus fruits. Clean and focused on the finish. Very fine. Tasted October 2009.

Complex aromatics of damp earth, dried herbs, cherries, fresh mushrooms, and currants are followed by a medium-bodied, attractively made, elegant wine. With admirable complexity and a nice finish, it should drink well for 10-15 years.

About the Producer

Château Canon is a Premier Grand Cru Classé château in Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux. It owns pockets of vineyards close to Saint-Émilion town, with a large core parcel right on the very edge. This parcel is almost completely walled in and is traditionally hand-harvested and ploughed by horses. It is planted entirely with Merlot. This is regularly used in the Château Canon grand vin, along with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc from the estate's various other vineyards. More than 60 percent of Canon's vineyards are planted to Merlot. Most of the rest is Cabernet Franc, although a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon survived the cull in the late '90s. The grapes are blended carefully to get the most from each: Merlot brings smoothness, finesse and intense fruit aromas; while Cabernet Franc brings structure and extra ability to age. The Château also makes the Croix Canon wine from an 11-hectare (27-acre) vineyard that borders the Canon estate. Buyers should be aware of the high number of wines from the Right Bank whose names include the word "Canon". This includes two distinct wines named Château Canon from Canon-Fronsac, one of which has a very similar label to this more famous wine.
