The 2009 Chambertin is another super-impressive wine. It possesses tons of intensity and richness in an understated style. The gorgeous inner perfume and powerful structure place it somewhere in between the Charmes and the Latricieres. This shows plenty of dark fruit packed in a frame of serious depth and richness. It is a hugely promising wine from Camille Giroud. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. I was very impressed with the wines I tasted at Camille Giroud. While top selections are hugely successful, readers should also pay attention to the village wines, which deliver plenty of character at accessible prices. Most of the wines are made from purchased fruit sourced from growers with whom the winery has long term relationships. The harvest took place between the 8th and 15th of September. Sugar levels were higher than in 2005. Macerations were on the long side in 2009, and ranged from 19-24 days versus the more typical 12-17. Most of the wines were made from 100% destemmed fruit, although a few selections - the Corton-Rognets and Chambertin in particular - saw some whole bunches. Malos were completed between February and April 2010 and the wines were not racked during their aging. Bottling began just after harvest 2010 for some of the early maturing reds, but most of the wines were still in barrel at the time of my visit in late February, with the exception of the Grands Crus, most of which had been racked into steel and were awaiting bottling towards the end of March. This has a sweet fleshy bouquet with raspberry coulis and tart red cherries that lacks a little delineation. The palate is very smooth on the entry, good extraction here, very harmonious but perhaps a little linear towards the finish. Fine. Tasted January 2011.

The 2009 Chambertin is utterly impeccable from start to finish. Layers of fruit fill out the wine’s broad-shouldered frame, leading to a voluptuous, seamless crescendo of aromas and flavors. The 2009 possesses tons of intensity and fabulous overall balance. What a great showing. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. About the Producer
Old and revered negociant, Camille Giroud was founded in 1865 and has long been known for releasing big powerful Burgundies with exceptional aging potential. In 2001 the estate was acquired by a group of investment bankers led by wine collector Joe Wender and his wife, renowned American Winemaker Ann Colgin. They hired 24 year old David Croix straight out of Oenology school to manage the distinguished cellar and began to acquire grapes to produce their own collection of great wines. Today David's successor Carel Voorhuis is crafting pure, seductive terroir-driven wines which are extremely aromatic, modern and refined with a wonderful texture.
