The 2013 Chambolle Musigny les Veroilles is initially reticent on the nose and demands coaxing, eventually reluctantly revealing redcurrant jus and pomegranate scents. The palate is medium-bodied with an abiding sense of symmetry and poise, the acidity beautifully judged and very harmonious toward the silky, almost Vosne-like finish that oozes class.

There are only two barrels of 2013 Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru this year instead of the usual six. The nose is feisty at first, offering fresh mango, dried apricots and wild honey that gains intensity in the glass, then ebbs back and achieves more focus. The palate is taut and fresh with quite pointed acidity and then it just starts to run out of breath at the finish, as if it had used up all its energy on the aromatics.

The 2013 Marsannay les Longeroies has the most flamboyant and expressive bouquet of the three Marsannay crus: very pure and defined with floral scents developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine structure and mineralité, quite edgy with a long persistent, stony finish. Excellent.

The 2013 Morey St Denis en la Rue de Vergy, which sees 30% new oak, has a very expressive transparent nose that to be prosaic for a moment, is just pure unadulterated 100% Pinoté! The palate continues with a very feminine, lithe texture that is extremely pure and it is blessed with a beautiful confit-like finish. This is one of the most elegant wines from this appellation that I have encountered.

The 2013 Morey St Denis en la Rue Vergy Blanc has a tightly wound bouquet with hints of honeysuckle and candied orange peel. The palate is fresh on the entry with a fine line of acidity. This is nicely balanced with fine mineralité and a taut steely finish. Excellent.

The 2013 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos du Fonteny has an abiding confit-like bouquet: blackcurrants and freshly picked raspberries, chalky scents developing in the glass after. The palate is medium-bodied with quite rigid tannins, masculine and tight at the moment but there is still plenty of energy on the finish. Give this a year or two in bottle.

The 2013 Marsannay Village Rosé, which was already in bottle, has a lovely strawberry bouquet that opens nicely in the glass. The palate is fresh and crisp with strawberry again mixed with Clementine and citrus fruit. This is impressive - the only negative being that it was the depths of winter outside and not summer!

The 2013 Gevrey Chambertin Petite Chapelle has a more expressive bouquet than the Clos du Fonteny with a mélange of red and black brambly fruit interlaced with woodland scents. The palate is extremely pure with filigree tannins, layers of red cherry and cassis fruit leading to a harmonious finish. Utterly charming, even if it does not possess the substance of Bruno's other Gevrey crus.

The 2013 Marsannay Blanc has a lifted lime flower and bruised-apple bouquet. The palate is fresh on the entry, a little gas for me to contend with, but bridled with an easygoing brioche-tinged finish.

The 2013 Vosne Romanee les Champs Perdrix has a tightly wound bouquet with black cherries and bilberry scents. The palate is nicely structured, slightly grainy in texture with a touch of orange sorbet tincturing the small dark cherries on the finish. This is a pretty little thing, though perhaps just a touch ephemeral.

The 2013 Gevrey Chambertin Village has a conservative blackberry and hedgerow-scented bouquet that needs a little more fruité by the time of bottling. The palate is sappy in the mouth with a fine saline finish, but I feel it is a little overwhelmed by its compadres within Bruno’s portfolio. Drink over the next two or three years.

The 2013 Marsannay les Vaudenelles has a very "natural" bouquet with brambly red fruit - slightly tertiary in style. The palate is medium-bodied with light, slightly stringy tannins but an easygoing finish that slips down the throat. Very fine, but I feel that it is not in the same class as the “Longeroies” or the “en la Rue de Vergy."

The 2013 Savigny les Beaune la Dominodes has a muted, tertiary nose that I feel was compromised by the hail. The palate is “spiky” on the entry with a prickle of acidity. It does not quite have the harmony of Bruno’s other 2013s, although there is still freshness and vitality here. It is just that the finish feels a little austere.
About the Producer
Domaine Bruno Clair is a young boutique winery in the Cote de Nuits appellation in Burgundy, France. Bruno Clair has a large number of vineyards, including the Clos de Beze in Chambertin and other first growths in Gevrey and Savigny, with a total of 12.5 acres of grand cru and first growths, and village vineyards scattered throughout Marsanne, Gevrey, Gevrey and Savigny. Chambolle Musigny, Morey St Denis, Vosne Romanee and Aloxe-Corton. The oldest of these vines is the Grand Cru de Beze, where 2/3 of the vines (mainly Pinot Noir) were planted in 1912, while the remaining 1/3 were planted in 1972. The Cazetiers, a first growth, is also quite distinctive. Located on the top of a hill in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, the white marl of this vineyard gives the wines a richer mineral flavour, which makes them very different from the neighbouring Clos St-Jacques. Despite its high altitude, the wines from Cazetiai are low in acidity and only require a period of maturation before becoming very rounded on the palate. At present, Château Bruno Clair offers a wide range of wines, including classic reds such as Chambertin-Clos de Bèzes Grand cru and Bonnes Mares Grand Cru, in addition to rosé sparkling wines (Rose) and White wines. These Pinot Noir reds are powerful, but not over-extracted, giving the impression of being over-extracted, and are loved and appreciated by consumers and critics alike.
