Brovia's 2013 Barolo is gorgeous. Deep, ample and beautifully layered in the glass, it possesses terrific expansiveness in every dimension. An exotic bouquet laced with hints of orange peel, cinnamon, pomegranate, kirsch and mint melds into a core of rich red stone fruit. This one of the best straight Barolos readers will come across. It is built on a core of fruit from the Brea Cru in Serralunga (the part outside the Ca' Mia parcel), with the addition of about 30% juice left over after the casks for the single-vineyard Barolos have been filled. The 2013 is one of the very finest values in high-end wine. Don't miss it.

Sweet floral aromatics, a hint of orange peel and spice are some of the signatures in Brovia's 2013 Barolo. In some vintages, Brovia's straight Barolo can be an overachiever, but in 2013 it is more of an inline performer. My impression today is that the 2013 will offer its best drinking sooner rather than later. As always, Brovia bottled their straight Barolo after the single-vineyard wines, hence its inclusion in this article.

The 2013 Barolo by Brovia is made with a blend of fruit from the estate's various single vineyards. A large part of that fruit comes from medium-aged vines from the Brea site in Serralunga d'Alba. This is a fabulous and generous expression that offers a polished and elongated quality. The wine stretches beyond its borders with intense aromas of dark fruit and licorice. It also offers ample dimension and depth.

About the Producer

Brovia was founded in 1863 and remains to this day a small, family owned and run winery. Broiva has one of the most impressive vineyards collection in the entire Barolo: 19 hectares of vineyards in Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d'Alba which read like a list of the greatest vineyards in Barolo: Garbèt Suѐ, Rocche, Villero in Castiglione Falletto, and Brea in Serralunga d’Alba. Brovia’s production is tiny, around 60,000 bottles of wines per annum (half of it are Barolo). Yields in the vineyard and also in the winemaking are kept very low to produce the best wines. Brovia practices organic farming, uses natural yeast fermentation, maceration time is around 20-25 days. The wines are aged in the most traditionist method: in 3,000 liters botti (big barrels) until it is ready for bottling unfiltered.
