Breaky Bottom is a small-scale, family-run vineyard nestled in a secluded fold of the Sussex Downs, established by winemaker Peter Hall in 1974. With six acres of vines, the estate focuses on producing high-quality sparkling wines, primarily from Seyval Blanc, a variety that Hall has championed since the vineyard's inception. The first sparkling brut, released as ‘Millennium Cuvée Maman Mercier’ in 2000, marked a significant shift in production toward sparkling wines. The vineyard benefits from a climate akin to Champagne, characterized by free-draining chalk loam soil enriched with flint. This ideal microclimate minimizes spring frost risk and promotes the growth of early-ripening grape varieties. Breaky Bottom's limited annual yield, typically around 10,000 bottles, reflects its commitment to quality over quantity.
