Reviewed by: James Suckling

A bright and vivid VN with cherry, violet and hibiscus aromas and hints of peach and lemon that follow through to a medium body. There are fine and integrated tannins and a vivid finish with lots of energy. From biodynamically grown grapes. Vegan. Needs a year or two to show its true excellence, but already a beautiful and linear wine. Drink or hold.

About the Producer

Avignonesi is located in the town of Montepulciano in the Tuscany region of Italy and is the largest winery in Montepulciano. It is the largest winery in Montepulciano. After the grapes have been harvested and hung for several months to dry, some of the water has evaporated and the must has become very thick, which is slowly fermented in small oak barrels called "Caratelli" and aged for more than two years to produce the very aromatic and sweet Vinsanto. With an alcohol content of up to 15%, it is often flavoured with dried fruit, walnuts and hazelnuts, and although it is a little sweet, a small glass with a few cantucci almond biscuits after dinner is a sweet memory of the Tuscan countryside at its most typical. In the 14th century, a noble family called the "Arvenonis" owned this estate, which is how the winery got its name, and in 1974 it was purchased by the Falvo brothers, who devoted their efforts to grape harvesting and winemaking, introducing international grape varieties such as Chardonnay, in addition to local varieties. In 2009, the estate was sold to the Belgian businesswoman Virginie Saverys. Saverys.) When she took over the winery, Virginie Saverys set out to achieve two major goals: one was to convert all the vineyards to biodynamic farming methods to produce not only quality wines, but also healthy wines. The other goal was to expand the vineyard area to meet the global market demand for Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The total vineyard area of the winery amounts to 200 hectares and consists of 10 fast vineyards in different locations. Eight of them are in the town of Montepulciano and two in Cortona, so that we can produce the wines we need according to the terroir of each vineyard. In 2013, the grapes have all been cultivated using biodynamic methods, without the use of chemicals. In terms of winemaking: the grapes are hand-picked at maturity. The winery produces white and red wines as well as the winery's speciality, sacramental wine. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 10 years in small "Caratelli" oak barrels and bottled for a further year before being released.
