The 2001 Richebourg Grand Cru from Anne Gros has a well defined, comparatively voluptuous nose thanks to the layering of new oak, but the wood is enmeshed within the fruit and maintains a very sensual purity, not masking the pinoté as I suspect it did in its formative years. The aromatics need time to open, but it is worth the wait. The palate is medium-bodied, very well balanced, supple and rounded - a texture that belies the backbone and structure within. It is a plush take on Richebourg, a style synonymous with Anne Gros, and here it works extremely well, especially considering that 2001 was not a top-grade Burgundy vintage. Chapeau Anne!

Now this is real bona fide Grand Cru Richebourg. Much more limpid in the glass compared next to the A.F. Gros’ Richebourg 2001 and much clearer. The nose is pure and heavenly: Morello cherry, wild strawberry, rose petals, some freshly tilled soil, all with magnificent delineation. The palate is just pure exuberant Pinot Noir, beautifully structured with a sublime symmetry to it. Well-integrated, polished new oak that will take another decade or so to become fully integrated into the wine. Sweet blueberry, cassis and cherry on the finish. Its gracefulness belies its power. Magnificent. Drinking 2010-2025. Tasted November 2006.

The nose is very closed, with faint aromas of blackberry leaf and black cherries. A very complex palate with silky smooth tannins and stunning definition. Black cherries - a touch more earthy than usual. Stunning focus and intensity on the finish. Fabulous wine. Tasted March 2002.
About the Producer
Subtle, harmonious, supple—Burgundy from Domaine Anne Gros is intimately tied with the elegant and poised character of wines from Vosne-Romanée. While each cru faithfully reflects its terroir, it is terroir as translated through Gros’ expert touch, offering richer aromatics, rounder curves, silkier tannins. The combination is irresistible, so much so that Gros’ very limited production is snapped up by global collectors faster and faster each vintage. Anne Gros simply is one of the top winemakers in Burgundy today, which explains why her wines have inspired such a cult-like following. Importantly for us, Gros personifies the sort of winemaker with whom we have always sought to work: an artisan with a clear vision of her terroir and talents, and the grace to be humble despite the weight of Burgundian tradition and family history. Anne Gros took over her father’s winery (Domaine François Gros) in the late 1980s. Yet there have been Gros family members in Vosne since the 1830s; land holdings have split among family members for generations. Today, there are four separate wineries in Vosne owned by the extended Gros family, including Domaine Anne Gros: Gros Frere et Soeur, Anne-Francoise Gros and Michel Gros, all of whom are Anne’s cousins.
