About the Producer
Stony Hill, established in 1951 by Fred and Eleanor McCrea on the scenic slopes of Spring Mountain, is renowned for its exceptional white wines. The estate's high elevation, volcanic soil, and limestone sub-layer provide ideal growing conditions that reflect the McCreas' passion for white Burgundy. The inaugural vintage, released in 1952, marked the beginning of Napa Valley's first cult wine producer, known for its meticulous winemaking practices. Under the guidance of Mike Chelini, who succeeded Fred after his passing in 1977, Stony Hill maintained its legacy of crafting elegant, classically proportioned wines, primarily sold through a selective mailing list. The vineyard expanded to include European varietals like Pinot Blanc, Johannisberg Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Semillon. Today, under the stewardship of the Lawrence Family, Stony Hill continues to produce world-class wines using sustainable and regenerative farming practices, honoring the rich heritage established by the McCrea family.
