About the Producer
Located in the village of Chassagne-Montrachet in the Cote de Beaune appellation of Burgundy, France, Domaine Thomas Morey is a young winery, but the family behind it has a long history. On the basis of the family vineyards, Thomas has acquired or leased a total of 5 hectares of vineyards, which now total 13 hectares. The majority of the vineyards are located in Chassins-Montrachet, but some are also located in the villages of Maranges, Santenay, Saint-Aubin and Beaune. The main soil types in the vineyard are limestone, clay, sandy and some iron-rich soils. The main grape varieties in the vineyard are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Thomas is very strict in the management of the vineyard, such as cutting back heavily to reduce yields and to avoid the need for "Green Harvest". Arguably one of Burgundy's most talented winegrowers, Thomas was hired by Domaine de La Romanee-Conti to manage its Le Montrachet Grand Cru. In terms of winemaking, the estate mostly follows the Burgundian tradition. The difference is that Thomas insists on using Indigenous Yeasts for fermentation and never uses sulfur dioxide. After fermentation, the red and white wines are matured in oak barrels for at least 12 months before bottling. Currently, Domaine Thomas Morey produces several red and white wines, such as Domaine Thomas Morey Bourgogne Pinot Noir and Domaine Thomas Morey Les Baudines. The latter was awarded 17 points by Jancis Robinson in 2008 and 2009.
