About the Producer
00 "Double Zero" Wines is a family-owned and operated modern house of fine and rare wines established in 2015 by Chris and Kathryn Hermann, headquartered in the Willamette Valley, Oregon, USA with Grand Cru French projects in Burgundy and Champagne. Zero is the number of potential in numerology. As a first-generation American, Chris Hermann named his family winery 00 Wines to represent his relentless quest to push forward the potential of Chardonnay "0" and Pinot Noir "0" in both the New World and the Old World. Dr. Richard Hermann knew exceptional wine. As an immigrant from Europe in the 1950s, Dr. Hermann settled his family in Corvallis, Oregon, where he taught in the Oregon State University botany and forestry departments where he became a world-renowned expert in Douglas Fir genetics. His Wife Freya Hermann was a professor of pharmacy at Oregon State University where she specialized in Plant Drug Compounding. Richard, as his friends called him, was fascinated by the development of the Willamette Valley wine industry and was delighted that he could source fine wines from his home in the New World. Together with his son Chris Hermann, Richard became an early patron of Pinot masters David Lett and John Thomas. In 2015 Richard and Chris founded 00 Wines as a family project to continue their shared passion for Willamette Valley Pinot noir and Chardonnay. What started as a family project has become an internationally praised winery specializing in fine and rare Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that collectors, sommeliers, and winemakers view as benchmark wines within just a few vintages in the marketplace. Today the winery is run by chris and his wife Kathryn. Today, 00 Wines produces 3,500 cases of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Willamette Valley, as well as small-lots of Grand Cru Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in burgundy and Champagne. The 00 Wines winemakers are at once both traditional and innovative – trained under the most prestigious winemakers and the descendants of prestigious winemaking families in the US and in France. They continue to push the potential of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir forward in their respective regions. 00 winemakers believes in quality and embraces experience in biodynamic practices in the vineyards and in the winery yield better wine with complex flavors, textures, and aromas thanks to the preservation of native yeast populations, acidity, and phenolics. Winery practices center around the moon phases and the tides, because wine Is alive and responds to the pull of gravity like all creatures in nature. 00 Wines currently does not have an estate vineyard, but rather chooses to work with small parcels of some of the oldest and most interesting vineyards for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the World. In Willamette Valley, examples include the 1968 planting of own-rooted Pinot Noir planted by dick Erath, the 1972 planting of own-rooted Pinot Noir in the Hyland Vineyard, and old wente clone chardonnay. In Burgundy, we make wine from the historic plots of Clos de la Roche, Corton-Charlemagne, and Pernand-Vergelesses Ile des Vergelesses. In Champagne, we work with Julien Launois to produce Blanc de blancs champagne from the 6.5 hectares of Chardonnay vines that have been in his family for generations.
